MRC supports resolution opposing Firearms Registration Act

24 January 2019 à 12:00 am

At the most recent meeting of mayors of the Pontiac MRC, the members of the regional council passed a resolution opposing the Firearms Registration Act, which came into effect on January 29th, 2018. The owners of unrestricted firearms must, since that date, request that their rifles or shotguns be registered with the Quebec’s Service d’immatriculation des armes à feu (SIAF).

Last week, the municipality of Mansfield-et-Pontefract presented a resolution, which was adopted by the municipal council, inviting the mayors of other sectors of the MRC to ask the government to cancel this register. During an interview with CHIP 101.9, Brian Boisvert, the second seat on the municipal council of Mansfield, said that Mansfield wants to project the voices of several citizens who are worried about the future of hunting:

The resolution tabled by Mansfield was “well received” by the MRC Pontiac, according to Mayor Gilles Dionne:

The municipality plans to send the resolution to various individuals in the provincial political scene, including Quebec Premier François Legault, Minister responsible for the Outaouais region, Mathieu Lacombe, and the Member of Parliament for Pontiac, André Fortin . Gilles Dionne also said he hopes that the voices of his citizens will be heard by the various levels of government.

January 23 (Wednesday), Quebec announced that it has relaxed the conditions surrounding the firearms registration. Now, only the serial number of the weapon will be required, the barrel length will no longer be required and the obligation to report a trip after 15 days will be changed. Here now is the Premier of Quebec François Legault reiterating his strong support for the establishment of the registry.
