MRC Pontiac Council of Mayors: resolutions concerning the floods
The mayors of the MRC Pontiac met for the month of May on Wednesday, where among the topics of discuss during the meeting was the notable resolutions in regards to the floods. Here is an overview of the resolutions that were passed during the meeting.
Local office for the Quebec Ministry of Public Security
The MRC Pontiac plans to ask the ministry of Public Safety to establish a temporary office in the MRC Pontiac to answer residents’ questions about the floods. Warden, Jane Toller, gave more details;
Another meeting from the Ministry of Public Security in English
The MRC Pontiac wants the Ministry of Public Security to organize another meeting for flood victims, like the one that took place last week in Fort-Coulonge, but in English this time. Jane Toller emphasized the importance of providing information on emergency measures and services in both French and English and that it is even more “important” in a crisis like this, so that everyone can understand the instructions to follow:
Flood waste collection
The MRC Pontiac also passed a resolution during the Meeting of the Mayors, concerning the collection of residual materials following spring floods as a way to reduce or avoid significant costs to the individual municipalities. Temporary deposit sites will be set up for residents in the different affected areas across the Pontiac where they can leave their garbage in the coming weeks. The MRC Pontiac added that additional information, including locations and collection times, will be available soon.
Collaboration with Liberal and Provincial Pontiac elected officials
The Pontiac MP William Amos and Pontiac MNA André Fortin have been invited to attend the next meeting of the mayors on June 19th, in order to help develop a strategy in response to the floods in 2017 and 2019, and to prepare the Pontiac for potential spring floods in the future.
Meeting with Other elected officials of the region
Jane Toller asked to organize a meeting with other politicians in the region to get involved in the management of the Ottawa River dams. Ms. Toller would also like, by being involved in this management, to ensure the stability of dams and plans to request their strengthening if necessary.
