Food insecurity continues to grow in the Outaouais. According to the 2026 HungerCount of Moisson Outaouais, more than 108,100 requests for food assistance are answered each month in the region, an increase of 15% compared to 2025.

The number of applications has also jumped 71% since 2022, reflecting increasing pressure on community-based organizations to help those in need.

Children are particularly affected by this situation. They account for 37.6% of those receiving food aid, or more than one in three people. On the other hand, responding organizations serve over 91,700 meals and snacks each month, an increase of 16% in one year.

Moisson Outaouais attributes this situation to the increase in the cost of living, particularly housing and food. More and more households are struggling to cover their basic expenses.

The regional organization, which works with 52 affiliated organizations, also faces supply, storage and operational capacity challenges.

According to Marie-Pier Chaput, director of communications and member of the Moisson Outaouais branch, requests for food aid have increased by 71% in four years. She stressed that food aid is a response to an emergency, but sustainable solutions are needed to address the causes of food insecurity.

Moisson Outaouais invites the public to contribute to its efforts by making a donation through its website.
