Measles alert: CSSHBO calls for vigilance
Measles alert: CSSHBO calls for vigilance
Cases of measles have been reported in Quebec, prompting the CSSHBO (Centre de services scolaires des Hauts-Bois-de-l’Outaouais) to remind people of the importance of vaccination. This highly contagious disease can lead to serious complications, but vaccination remains the best way to protect yourself.
In a press release sent to parents and staff on March 11, the CSSHBO invites those concerned to check their vaccination status:
– Born after 1980: Two doses of the vaccine are required.
– Born between 1970 and 1979: One dose is sufficient (two doses for healthcare workers and travelers).
– Born before 1970: Considered naturally protected.
In the event of a measles outbreak in a school, unvaccinated students should isolate themselves for several weeks to limit the spread of the virus. To find out more about guidelines for schools, consult the National Director of Public Health’s document: Official guidelines.
Measles is easily transmitted through the air or by direct contact with an infected person or object. An infected person is contagious four days before and after the appearance of the rash.
Symptoms to watch out for:
– Fever, cough, runny nose
– Red eyes
– Skin rash
If symptoms appear:
– Stay home and call Info-Santé 811
– If you need to see a doctor, tell the staff in advance and wear a mask
The measles vaccine is available free of charge. Book an appointment on Clic Santé or call 1-877 644-4545.
