Mandatory Winter Tires: December 15th
Mandatory Winter Tires: December 15th
It’s that time of the year again, drivers across Quebec must have winter tires on their vehicles starting on December 15th, according to the Highway Safety Code. Sgt. Marc Tessier, of the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), stated that after the 15th, the SQ will proceed to check vehicles on a regular basis.
Owners of non-compliant vehicles are subject to a minimum charge of $ 200 to $ 300. Notably, in 2019, the date for mandatory winter tires will change to December 1st.
Tessier also wanted to mention that certain individuals may still be subject to a fine in hazardous road conditions:
According to Article 330 of the Highway Safety Code (CSR) the SQ can fine an individual who they catch going over the recommended speed limit in relation to road conditions, in other words: even if the individual in question is driving the speed limit indicated on road signs, they may still be subject to a fine.
The SQ invites road users to consult the Quebec ministère des Transports, de la Mobilité durable et de l’Électrification des Transports du Québec et de la Société de l’Assurance Automobile du Québec, and the SAAQ’s websites to learn more about traffic code and road safety.
