More and more people will travel the roads of Quebec in the coming weeks because of the summer vacation. The Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) reminds road users that if they drive a vehicle or combination of vehicles with a total laden mass of 3,000 kg or more, they are under an obligation stop in the brake check areas.

For example, vacationers traveling with an recreational vehicle or drivers of pickup trucks that pull trailers or other loads are affected by this obligation. A sign with the inscription “Verification” indicates that one of these areas will be found one kilometer away.

The communications coordinator for Contrôle routier Québec, Lieutenant Jonathan Beauvais.

In the coming weeks, highway inspectors from the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec, in collaboration with the Sûreté du Québec, will work with drivers of vehicles affected by the obligation to stop in the brake check areas.

These awareness-raising operations will take place in the 5 regions of Quebec where the 13 brake check areas are located: Charlevoix, Chaudière-Appalaches, Côte-Nord, Abitibi-Témiscamingue and Outaouais.

Remember that a brake check area always precedes one or more particularly steep slopes. Excessive use of the brakes decreases their effectiveness, which can lead to loss of vehicle control, or worse, a collision. The verification area allows you to take the time to immobilize the vehicle in order to check the condition and proper functioning of its braking system.
