Local family doctors seeking patients

There’s good news for those without a family doctor in the Pontiac region, as the local family medicine network (GMF) is seeking out patients not currently assigned to one.

Pontiac GMF coordinator Danielle Romain explained that this was an extremely uncommon situation, however, they added four new doctors to the region in the last 12 months, and also have established physicians looking to add more patients to their load. Romain said that there are many people who believe they are still on the waitlist for a GP but may have been removed inadvertently if they changed addresses or phone numbers. She added that those who already have a family doctor in the region are not able to transfer to a new physician.

Romain said that while they have some doctors within their network who are nearing retirement, they believe they will be able to handle the transition. Over the last several years they have implemented a stopgap measure called collectively registered patients who have access to care through a pool of doctors from the GMF, with the ultimate goal of pairing them with a doctor.
