The municipality of L’Isle-aux-Allumettes criticizes the Warden of the MRC Pontiac, Jane Toller, for having publicly supported the closure of the Québec/Ontario border without consulting the other elected officials in the Pontiac.

In a resolution adopted on Tuesday, March 31st, and released on Friday, L’Isle-aux-Allumettes said it was “firmly against the closing of the border” and asked “that any further consideration of limited access to the region be discussed at the local level before its implementation”.

The mayor of L’Isle-aux-Allumettes, Winston Sunstrum.

Mayor Sunstrum mainly criticized the comments made by Jane Toller on March 27th, when she said she was in favor of closing the border between Ontario and Quebec.

However, he express agreement with controlled access to the Outaouais region, as announced on April 1st by the Government of Quebec, which aims to limit travel within the territory. One of these checkpoints has been installed near the des Allumettes bridge (between Pembroke and L’Isle-aux-Allumettes).

Proximity to Renfrew County
Winston Sunstrum would like that police at the checkpoints consider the proximity of the municipality of L’Isle-aux-Allumettes to the County of Renfrew and the lack of essential services in the western sector of the Pontiac.

The mayor of L’Isle-aux-Allumettes reiterated that the municipality must continue to meet the needs of its residents and hopes that the residents access to Ontario will be supported for their essential services, since, he will not recommend shopping in other areas of the Pontiac if its not advantageous for them.

Notice to cottagers
According to Winston Sunstrum, some cottagers are currently in L’Isle-aux-Allumettes. He reminded cottagers of the instructions to follow in terms of social distancing established by the government and for those thinking of coming to avoid unnecessary trips to the region.
