Les municipalités rurales de l’Outaouais multiplient les projets pour améliorer la qualité de vie des citoyens
Modernized schoolyards, inclusive play structures, redesigned community spaces, and increased volunteer engagement: several rural municipalities in the Outaouais region are continuing to invest in improving recreational infrastructure and gathering places.
In its latest bulletin, Loisir sport Outaouais highlights several projects recently completed in various communities across the region.
In Papineauville, a new inclusive play structure for children aged 0 to 5 has been installed at Docteur‑Chapdelaine Park. The infrastructure aims to improve accessibility for young children living with disabilities—equipment that remains relatively uncommon in the Papineau MRC.
In the school sector, a fully redesigned schoolyard has also been created thanks to the collaboration of several partners. The project includes gardening areas, an outdoor classroom, hammocks, musical installations, and various equipment encouraging physical activity.
In Lac‑des‑Plages, the municipality has inaugurated a new Biblio‑café integrated into the municipal library. The new space offers residents a welcoming place to read, work, chat, or simply enjoy a coffee. The goal is to create a true community hub that fosters social interaction and a sense of belonging.
In the Pontiac, the municipality of Shawville stands out with the development of a modernized welcome area at Mill Dam Park. The space includes a pergola, urban furniture, installations accessible to people with reduced mobility, a bike rack, and a water fountain adapted for all users. Details from Normand Veillette of Loisir sport Outaouais:
“The Mill Dam Park in Shawville is one of the most beautiful parks in the province because there’s a hard-surface parking lot, a hard-surface trail, accessible bathrooms, an accessible swing for people with disabilities, a bike rack, a sign, some shade, etc. It’s a really beautiful park thanks to Chrystal, the general director, and everybody who invested in the park and who created a safe and fun environment for the public.” ”
In addition to these infrastructure projects, Loisir sport Outaouais is also issuing a call for volunteers ahead of several major events scheduled for this summer, including the El Gros Fest in Cantley and the Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival.
The organization also highlights the importance of recreation committees in rural municipalities. These volunteer groups play a key role in organizing activities and events that bring communities to life throughout the year. According to Loisir sport Outaouais, their contribution allows municipalities to offer diverse programming while keeping operating costs down.
Finally, the organization notes that the federal New Horizons for Seniors Program is expected to launch soon, providing new funding opportunities for community projects.
For Loisir sport Outaouais, these initiatives demonstrate the importance of partnerships between municipalities, organizations, and citizens in developing vibrant, inclusive living environments that meet the needs of all generations.
