Justin Trudeau tightens access to the Canadian border

Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, closes access to the Canadian border to almost all foreigners who are non-resident of Canada.

Only Americans, crew members, diplomats and those whose families are Canadian will still be admitted to the country “for now,” said Trudeau on Monday, adding that the situation could change quickly.

These new border controls will not apply to trade and commerce.

Canadians who are currently abroad are asked to return home. However, people with symptoms of influenza or COVID-19 will not be admitted on planes to Canada. Trudeau indicated that services will be offered to them where they are located.

International flights will also be restricted to four airports in Canada: Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary. Flights from the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean will not be affected by these measures.

To support Canadians abroad, the federal government will establish an assistance program to enable them to obtain funding to return to Canada or to cover essential costs before their return.

Quebec welcomes these border measures
In his daily press briefing, Quebec Premier François Legault said he is satisfied with this announcement to tighten Canada’s borders.
