Inflation and Food Assistance: A Growing Cause for Concern in Outaouais

Inflation and Food Assistance: A Growing Cause for Concern in Outaouais

19 December 2025 à 1:41 pm

In the Outaouais region, inflation, rapidly rising rents, and higher food prices are placing increasing pressure on many households. This reality is clearly reflected in the demand for food assistance, which has reached record levels across the region.

According to recent data, Moisson Outaouais and its network of partner organizations now respond to more than 94,000 requests for food assistance each month—an increase of approximately 48% over the past four years. This growth highlights how economic conditions are affecting a growing number of people. Contrary to common assumptions, food assistance is not limited to those who are unemployed: more than one in five users is employed but still struggles to meet basic needs.

Families are among the hardest hit. Nearly half of food assistance recipients are households with children, who account for more than one-third of all individuals served. Seniors and low-income workers are also among the most vulnerable groups. One of the main factors contributing to this situation is housing costs, which represent nearly one-third of tenants’ income on average in Outaouais, leaving little room for groceries and other essential expenses.

Added to this is the high cost of food, which continues to rise faster than incomes. For many households, difficult choices must be made between paying rent, eating properly, or covering other essential costs. In this context, food banks and community organizations play a critical role, but they too are under growing strain.

This sustained increase in demand for food assistance underscores the urgent need to address housing affordability, the rising cost of living, and support for low-income households. Without long-term solutions, an increasing number of people risk having to rely on these essential services to meet their basic needs.
