Increased police presence on Quebec roads to curb distraction and reckless driving
From May 1st to 7th, 2026, motorists across Quebec can expect increased police surveillance on the road network. This intensified enforcement is part of the National Concerted Operation (ONC) targeting distracted driving and reckless behavior.
The operation brings together several road safety partners, including the Association des directeurs de police du Québec, the Sûreté du Québec, the Service de police de la Ville de Gatineau, Contrôle routier Québec and the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec.
Authorities are specifically targeting behaviors that compromise the safety of all road users. These include failing to obey traffic signs—such as stop signs, red lights, and school bus signals—illegal passing, following too closely, and other reckless actions. Distracted driving remains a key focus, particularly the use of cell phones behind the wheel, which continues to be a widespread issue despite existing penalties.
Police also remind drivers that some commonly overlooked actions are in fact violations. For instance, failing to use a turn signal is not only frustrating for other drivers but also dangerous. Signaling intentions allows others to anticipate movements and helps prevent collisions. It is a legal requirement under the Highway Safety Code.
Beyond issuing tickets, the operation primarily aims to raise awareness among drivers. Authorities stress that every action matters and that cautious driving is essential to ensuring everyone’s safety. The public is encouraged to follow updates shared on social media by police services and partner organizations throughout the week of the operation.
