Increased police intervention until Thursday

9 June 2020 à 12:00 am

As part of the national concerted operation, VITESSE, to be held until June 11, police will intervene intensively with drivers who violate the Highway Safety Code. The Quebec police services, in collaboration with the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), are joining forces in this operation to raise awareness and make drivers aware of speed-related risks for all road network users. Remember that careless driving and speed will be particularly targeted.

In recent weeks, an increase in speeding has been observed across the road network. Reduced ridership due to the pandemic has contributed to the adoption of risky behaviors for some drivers, including speeding. As part of the progressive deconfinement, a significant increase in traffic on the road network is to be expected. Different types of users, including pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists will be back. In addition, the resumption of activities in the construction industry means that there will be an increased presence of workers and signalers around the construction sites. In this context, compliance with speed limits is essential to ensure the safety of all road users.

Speed is one of the main causes of road collisions in Quebec. According to some studies, reducing the average speed of traffic by 5 km / h would reduce the number of collisions by 15% annually.

According to the police, each driver reduced his average speed, the number of injuries and deaths on Quebec roads would be considerably reduced each year:

  • 12 fewer deaths for a reduction of 1 km / h
  • 60 fewer deaths for a reduction of 5 km / h
  • 120 fewer deaths for a reduction of 10 km / h
  • Data are based on a total of 400 deaths.

With this in mind, the deployment of Operation Speed will be under the theme “I’m slowing down. I save lives ”. The angle chosen aims to empower drivers and remind them that they can make a difference and help improve road safety by slowing down.
