Increased enforcement in school zones as students head back to school

Quebec drivers are being urged to slow down and remain vigilant as students return to school.

Increased traffic enforcement will be carried out across the province from August 24th to September 11th, with a particular focus on school zones.

Drivers are reminded to obey posted speed limits. Fines for speeding in a school zone are doubled during the designated school period.

Motorists and cyclists must also stop more than five metres away when approaching a school bus or minibus with its red flashing lights activated or its mandatory stop sign extended.

Drivers must obey the directions of police officers, school crossing guards and traffic controllers, even when their signals contradict posted signs.

Motorists are also required to stop at pedestrian crossings when a pedestrian has entered the yellow or white markings, or has indicated an intention to cross.

Parents dropping children off at school are being reminded to use designated, safe areas and avoid risky manoeuvres such as double parking and U-turns.

Authorities say following signs around schools—including bus zones, no-parking areas and designated drop-off zones—is essential to keeping students and other road users safe.

The campaign runs through September 11th.
