Île Reid protected by the Nature Conservancy of Canada
On May 24 the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) announced the protection of its two newest properties, île Hébert on the Lake of Two Mountains at the western tip of Montreal Island, and île Reid, east of Allumettes island on the Ottawa River. The Program Director of the Nature Conservancy of Canada for Western Quebec, Caroline Gagné, explains what this protection entails:
One of the reasons for protecting the islands is to protect the species on the island like the map turtle. Although the turtle is not at risk, the Nature Conservancy of Canada still would like to preserve the natural ecosystem.
Turtles in our region sometimes end up on our roadways. In case that happens, we should inform the NCC of where they are trying to cross and help them cross the roads. Caroline Gagné explains how to handle turtle’s when moving them off the road:
