Hydrological update in Mansfield-et-Pontefract: ongoing vigilance for the Coulonge and Outaouais Rivers

Hydrological update in Mansfield-et-Pontefract: ongoing vigilance for the Coulonge and Outaouais Rivers

4 May 2026 à 1:45 pm

The Municipality of Mansfield-et-Pontefract has issued a new update regarding the situation of the Coulonge and Outaouais Rivers, following recent fluctuations in water levels in the area.

For the Coulonge River, data indicates that the risk remains low but not zero. Although a significant rise is considered unlikely, certain conditions could still lead to rapid fluctuations, including upcoming precipitation, residual snowmelt at higher elevations, and upstream operational adjustments. As a precaution, the Municipality recommends keeping flood protection measures in place until conditions fully stabilize.

The situation on the Outaouais River remains more uncertain. Despite a recent decrease in water levels, the risk is still present due to the system’s capacity to absorb upcoming precipitation, inflows from northern reservoirs, and the sensitivity of the area to changes in flow rates. As a result, the removal of protective measures is not recommended for homes located in risk zones.

The Municipality reminds residents that hydrological conditions can change quickly and that maintaining a safety margin is essential to prevent potential damage. It also notes that even a moderate rise in water levels could affect already vulnerable areas.

Continuous monitoring is being carried out in collaboration with hydrological authorities, with several daily updates on water levels. A further update will be issued as soon as conditions allow recommendations to be adjusted.

Residents are encouraged to remain cautious and to contact the municipal office if they have any questions or require assistance.
