The Shawville Clarendon Fire Department didn’t have very far to travel when they were called about a house fire on Sunday afternoon. That’s because the home in question was located on Queen Street just a few feet from their station.

Chief Lee Laframboise told CHIP 101.9 that he received a call about the blaze 4:50 p.m. Sunday afternoon and responded with around 20 firefighters. He noted that one of his captains, who lives across the street, called him a minute later to say that he was already responding.

Despite the speedy response time,  Lafamboise said that the home suffered extensive damage, as the fire had climbed through the kitchen wall up to the attic. He said the fire was a difficult one to put out, and the majority of firefighters were on scene for around four hours.

“We got the big flames down quick,” he said. “But it just lasted forever because it was in the attic. We had to pull all the ceiling out of the upstairs, it was just a real [pain].”

Laframboise said that while the exact cause is unclear, the fire started in the kitchen with the stove. No one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported. He said there was no damage to the fire hall, but the house suffered extensive damage.
