High statistics for the month of August 2019

The Société de protection des forêts contre le feu (SOPFEU) noted a particularly busy month of August due to a higher and unusual number of fires across the territory, with a below average amount of territory affected by the fires in question. The fire prevention agent for the SOPFEU, Mélanie Morin, explained the reasons for these statistics.

Despite the approaching Fall season, Melanie Morin mentioned that people must remain vigilant in the forest.

The 2019 season is still considered a “very small season” in terms of the number of fires, as it’s below average. As of August 31st, firefighters have extinguished 293 fires affecting 5,777 hectares of forest. The average over the last ten years, on the same date, is 425 fires for more than 36,800 hectares.
