Government’s explanation of upcoming changes in flood zones

A draft law was adopted by the Quebec government to declare a special intervention zone (ZIS) in order to have better control/management of flood zones. The Director General of l’urbanisme, l’aménagement du territoire et de l’habitation department of the Quebec Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Stéphane Bouchard, gave more details on how the changes will affect certain municipalities.

According to information provided by Bouchard, the special intervention zone “will promote a better management of flood zones” with the objective of ensuring safety homes in the future as a result of limiting the construction and reconstruction of buildings located in the targeted areas(Flood Zones).

813 municipalities will be affected by these changes in flood zones. In the MRC Pontiac, the locations affected include:

All, including the TNOs, but with the exception of Rapides-des-Joachims, Shawville, and Thorne. The municipalities of Pontiac and La Pêche are also included in the list.

Upcoming Public consultations

On July 4, the Government of Quebec is holding a public consultation session at the RA center in Campbell’s Bay, for the affected residents to voice their concerns.
