Friends of Sault-des-Chats Invite You to Participate in Archaeological Excavations in Quyon

10 September 2025 à 12:05 pm

The organization Les Amis du Sault-des-Chats is pleased to announce that this year’s public archaeological digs, as part of the Archéo-Pontiac project, will take place in the heart of the village of Quyon, in the municipality of Pontiac, from September 27 to October 7, 2025.

This community initiative aims to uncover the long-buried secrets of the former Quyon Agricultural Fair site. Located at the confluence of the Ottawa and Quyon Rivers, the site holds the potential to reveal forgotten chapters of the Outaouais region’s history, lost for generations.

This free activity invites all history and heritage enthusiasts to help dig for traces of the past. Volunteer and one of the project’s founders, Audrey Lapointe, explains what they hope to discover with the help of the public:

The event will feature public archaeological excavations, artifact-cleaning workshops, guided tours with historical interpretation, and networking opportunities for regional heritage stakeholders. It offers a unique chance for citizens to explore the history of their community, handle genuine artifacts, and contribute to preserving collective memory. Audrey Lapointe explains that all objects uncovered will be used for another project:

The Archéo-Pontiac project is proudly supported by the MRC des Collines-de-l’Outaouais, Desjardins Caisse Populaire, the Municipality of Pontiac, the Outaouais Historical Society, and numerous local partners.

The excavations will take place at Quyon’s municipal park, next to the Quyon Community Centre at 2 Rue Ferry. Audrey Lapointe explains how the public can get involved:

Les Amis du Sault-des-Chats is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the heritage, historical, and natural richness of the Sault-des-Chats area within the Ottawa River watershed. To learn more or to get involved, visit their Facebook page.
