Fraudsters are exploiting the class action lawsuit regarding pre-packaged bread
Canadian consumers are being urged to be vigilant as fraudulent text messages and emails related to the class-action lawsuit concerning the price-fixing of pre-packaged bread are circulating.
According to warnings relayed by cybersecurity specialists, these messages claim that a payment is ready or that a specific step is required to receive compensation. The fraudsters aim to trick recipients into clicking on links or disclosing personal information.
The class-action lawsuit is, however, very real. It stems from allegations that Loblaw and Weston participated in a bread price-fixing scheme between 2001 and 2021. A $500 million national settlement has been reached to resolve the claims, although the companies deny any wrongdoing.
Consumers are advised to verify all communications through official channels and to be wary of unsolicited messages promising quick payment or requesting confidential information.
