Flooding: essential actions to limit damage

Flooding: essential actions to limit damage

17 April 2026 à 12:48 pm

Following heavy rainfall and flooding that have affected several areas in southern Quebec, thousands of homes have been impacted, leaving significant damage behind. In this context, experts are reminding residents of the key steps to take to reduce impacts while waiting for insurance providers to intervene.

The top priority is the safety of occupants. In the event of significant water infiltration, it is recommended to shut off the home’s electricity to avoid any risk of electrocution or fire. It is also advised to assess the condition of the building’s structure and consult a professional if there is any doubt.

Before entering a flooded area, wearing protective equipment is essential, including rubber boots, gloves, and a mask, as floodwater may be contaminated.

When conditions are safe, water can be gradually removed using pumps or appropriate equipment. Specialists recommend not draining the space too quickly, as this may further damage the building’s structure.

Once the water has been removed, materials that cannot be properly dried—such as carpets, insulation, upholstered furniture, or drywall—should be discarded to prevent deterioration and contamination.

Mold prevention is a critical step. Drying must be fast and thorough, using fans and dehumidifiers, ideally within 24 to 48 hours after flooding. Proper ventilation of the space is also recommended.

Cleaning surfaces should be done with appropriate products to remove any potential contaminants left by floodwater. Finally, it is important to document all damage with photos and keep receipts for affected belongings for insurance purposes.

Authorities remind the public that these quick actions can significantly reduce the extent of damage and help speed up recovery after a disaster.
