Fatal accident involving a motorcyclist occurred on Route 148 in Mansfield

A tragic accident occurred last night (September 19), around 8:45 pm, on Road 148 in Mansfield-et-Pontefract. A motorcyclist, who obeyed all the rules of the Code de la Route, was hit by a SUV driven by a 21-year-old woman. Coming from the Poirier street, the SUV rolled over and crossed over into the opposite lane to strike the motorcyclist.

The victim, Sylvain Bégin, aged 50, was a well-known member of the community of Fort-Coulonge. He was transported to the hospital, where he was declared dead.

Sergeant Stéphane Tremblay of the Sûreté du Québec relates the events.

Dangerous driving charges are expected to be laid against the SUV driver within the next few hours. Road 148 was reopened Sunday morning, at 7 a.m.

A Model Citizen

The community of Fort-Coulonge /Mansfield is in shock, as Sylvain Bégin was involved in several organizations, including Mansfield Fire Departement and Canada en Fête.
He was also the main organizer of the gift drive for underprivileged children in the community of Fort-Coulonge/Mansfield. He was Appointed General Manager of the municipality of L’Île-du-Grand-Calumet, after spending several years in this same position in Rapide-des-Joachims.

“The municipality is in mourning. Sylvain was well-like by all. He was working with the municipality to provide good services to citizens. It’s an immense loss for the municipality”, said Alice Meilleur-Pieschke, the deputy mayor of L’Île-du-Grand-Calumet, visibly touched by the event.

This is the second accident in three days involving a motorcyclist on Road 148, in Mansfield.
