École des Petits-Ponts receives $ 1000 from #FondationDesjardins

The École des Petits-Ponts received $ 1,000 from the Desjardins Foundation on February 4th for the innovative MATIS project (math, arts, technology, engineering, science).

“A huge thank you to Fondation Desjardins for believing in our youth and allowing teachers to make a difference,” said the teacher in charge of the MATIS project, Mélanie LaSalle.

The amount received will be used to buy materials for the different classes participating in this project. According to LaSalle, more than 150 students are involved in the project.

Here is an excerpt from the dossier submitted: “Working in a disadvantaged area, several students experience academic difficulties. For this reason, the teachers are trying to innovate their classes in order to motivate and engage their students, offering them a new way to learn. The MATIS project (math, arts, technology, engineering, science) was submitted to the Quebec government and accepted in November 2019. The funds obtained were used last year and will be used again this year for teacher training. How does our project motivate youth to persevere? The MATIS approach allows students to develop essential skills in the 21st century: problem solving, creativity, collaboration, persistence, self-confidence, etc. The students are active in all phases of the THEIR project: planning, creation, testing phase, evaluation, improvement. Students learn by doing. The margin of error in this type of approach is very important, the student will no longer be afraid to make it and will be more motivated to continue their studies.”
