Driving licence fees in Québec will cost more in 2026

10 December 2025 à 2:07 pm

In 2026, Québec drivers will see a slight increase in the cost of renewing their driver’s licence, following several years in which the insurance contribution had been heavily reduced by the SAAQ. For a Class 5 licence — the most common for motorists — the renewal fee will be approximately $50 for those with no demerit points. This increase is due to a reduction in the SAAQ discount: while the insurance contribution reduction reached 100% in 2025, it will now be 75%, raising the total amount payable.

For several years, Québec drivers have benefited from very low fees — for example, in 2025, renewing a Class 5 licence cost just over $26, which was exceptionally advantageous. In 2026, this payment relief is reduced but not eliminated entirely.

It is also important to note that the final price varies depending on the driving record. Drivers with demerit points will see their fees increase, as the insurance contribution depends on the risk associated with their profile. Additionally, costs may differ according to licence class — for example, a motorcycle or heavy-vehicle licence may have a different fee than a standard car licence.

In summary, for the majority of Québec drivers with a clean record, licence renewal will cost around $50 in 2026. While this is an increase compared to recent years, it still represents a reduced rate compared with the full cost prior to the SAAQ’s temporary discounts.
