Dr. S. E. McDowell Elementary School remembers Bryan Murray
More than 100 students and special guests gathered to the Dr. S.E. McDowell Elementary School gymnasium in Shawville on Thursday afternoon to rebrand the gym “The Bryan Murray Memorial Gymnasium”, in memory of Bryan Murray, former NHL head coach and Ottawa Senators general manager from Shawville. His wife, Geri Murray, who cut the inauguration ribbon at the event, told CHIP 101.9 that it was an honour for her family to see the name of her late husband being celebrated in his home town.
Bryan Murray began his coaching career in the 1981-82 season with the Washington Capitals and guided the Ottawa Senators to the Stanley Cup final as a coach 2006-2007. He was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer in 2014 and died on August 12th, 2017. His brother Bill Murray recounted how his career began in the Pontiac region.
An important figure in the sports community, his name was commemorated Thursday by a few key players involved with the Ottawa Senators, including the team’s coach and general manager, Pierre Dorion:
CHIP 101.9 also had the opportunity to chat with one of his former players and Ottawa Senators captain Daniel “Alfie” Alfredsson, who described what Bryan Murray left to the team as coach.
Dr. S. E. McDowell, School Principal, Anne Valcov, also spoke about why Brian Murray was chosen for the new name the school gymnasium.
