The MRC Pontiac posted an article published by Danielle Bélec Pontiac Journal on August 16th on its website.

In the article, Danielle Belec explains that the study leading to the Wardens elected by universal suffrage revealed that most MRC’s that opted for this option are small (less than 25,000 inhabitants), remote, do not have a dominant city center and have a per capita disposable income per person among the lowest in Quebec. She also said there seemed to be a consensus among the MRC’s and others like them that an elected official could not perform his duties as mayor and adequately represent the interests of the MRC. MRC’s are now local governments with legal responsibilities and have an increased level of accountability for economic development and business support, rural, cultural and socio-community development, strategic planning, environmental protection, fire safety and contingency plans and management of unorganized territories.
