With L’Isle-aux-Allumettes Mayor Winston Sunstrum not seeking re-election, there are three candidates all vying for his vacant seat: Louis Lair, Jeremiah Nephin and Corey Spence.

Spence said that his interest in local politics originated with his father’s time as the mayor of the municipality. He said that following the floods in 2017 and 2019, he formed a committee on the issue, and realized that he had the skill set to help his community, and felt he could do so by running for office.

Spence said that what makes the island special is the large amount of waterfront available and also the tight-knit community.

He said that if elected, his priority would be to improve the access to high-speed internet on the island, something that’s been a major complaint of residents for years.

The full interview with Spence is available here.
