Claude Bertrand talks campaigning, Green Party policy
This article is a part of a series of interviews CHIP 101.9 will be conducting with the candidates for the ongoing federal election. Each was offered roughly 15 minutes to answer questions about their campaign, as well as their party’s policies on a range of subjects. For more of our reporting on the federal election, you can visit the special Elections section of our website.
The Green Party of Canada will be represented by Claude Bertrand in the riding of Pontiac-Kitigan Zibi, who was also their candidate in the 2019 contest. A retired engineer and RCAF helicopter pilot, he resides in the Municipality of La Pêche.
Bertrand explained that his campaigning got off to a difficult start, as he had to go to court to ensure he was eligible to participate in the race. Following the 2019 election, Bertrand was required to file financial statements to Elections Canada, but he explained that due to a family tragedy, the paperwork didn’t get submitted in time.
Bertrand said that he would be in favour of nationalizing the extraction of some natural resources, pointing to Hydro-Quebec as an example of a successful state-owned enterprise, but said that it may not be feasible in some instances.
