Class-Action Lawsuit Against Spotify: Price Hikes Challenged in Quebec
Class-Action Lawsuit Against Spotify: Price Hikes Challenged in Quebec
Spotify’s price increases are being challenged in Quebec courts.
A motion for certification of a class action was filed on September 14 at the Montreal courthouse against the Swedish streaming giant.
The petitioner alleges that Spotify unilaterally raised the price of its Premium subscriptions, in alleged violation of the Consumer Protection Act.
According to the petition, these increases were implemented without complying with the rules governing changes to open-ended service contracts.
The plaintiff is seeking at least $200 for each Premium subscriber covered by the class action.
Note, however, that at this stage, this is not a judgment against Spotify. The proceedings are primarily aimed at obtaining authorization to pursue a class action. The allegations will therefore have to be reviewed by the courts, and Spotify will have the opportunity to present its defense.
If the class-action lawsuit is authorized, it could potentially allow Quebec subscribers affected by the price increases to participate in the legal proceedings.
