“What I see is that we don’t take, we don’t listen to the people on the ground who have solutions, who have ways of solving the problem,” she said (tr.). “It was a bit the case with the emergency in Gatineau, where you arrive on the ground, you sit down with everyone, then you realize that there are one, two, three options that have not been put on the table, whether for salaries or working conditions. That means that you have to take into consideration that the region is different. It’s not the same when you’re in Outaouais than when you’re in Saguenay Lac-Saint-Jean. So, consequently, the proposals you have put on the table must ensure that we take these realities into account with the border with Ontario which is right next door, especially for nurses, all these elements. Then, I have met several people since I have been in Outaouais this week. In housing too, there is no consultation that takes place on the ground. Then there are decisions that are made by the government that are completely disconnected from the reality on the ground and I think that makes a huge difference in the effectiveness of serving the population. I think we need to have governance that is regional, that is local, where we empower people locally rather than centralizing everything.”
