The Federal Minister of Agriculture, Marie-Claude Bibeau, participated in a consultation organized by Pontiac MP Sophie Chatel earlier this month. CHIP 101.9 took the opportunity to speak with the minister about the priorities of her department, as agriculture is one of the most important economic sectors of the Pontiac.

“All of our government is very committed to achieving our emission reduction targets and, of course, the agricultural sector is no exception,” she said (tr.). “And, moreover, our producers have already been involved for a long time. They always try to do the best. What they hold most precious is their land, but they are also the first to feel the effects of climate change. And with the droughts that we have seen, the floods that we have also had in the country this year, it is a brutal reminder that we must be even more ambitious in our measures to adapt our practices, to reduce our emissions, to sequester more carbon in the soil. So, these kinds of measures here. Yesterday, I announced a program that will provide financial incentives to agricultural producers who will more quickly adopt measures such as cover crops, pasture rotation or even better fertilizer management.”
