Sophie Chatel will represent the riding of Pontiac-Kitigan Zibi for a second term, as part of the winning Liberal party under Mark Carney.
Chatel, who watched the results come in with her supporters at the Chelsea Pub, thanked her volunteers and staff, as well as members of the community in attendance.
Based on Elections Canada results as of 11 a.m. Tuesday, with 252/253 polling stations reporting, Chatel had 30,504 votes (54.5%), compared to second place Conservative candidate Brian Nolan at 15,996 votes (27.7%).
The rest of the field was as follows: the Bloc’s Suzanne Proulx with 6,017 (10.4%), Gilbert Whiteduck of the NDP with 2,921 (5%), Green Party representative Claude Bertrand with 734 (1.3%) and Todd Hoffman of the PPC with 672 (1.2%). Turnout was 67.54 % or 57,844 of 85,639 registered electors.
Chatel said that voters had chosen “unity over division” but noted that difficult times were ahead.
