The class action lawsuit against bread manufacturers and retailers is moving forward. If you purchased packaged bread products from Loblaw-owned stores, you may be entitled to compensation.

In July, the Quebec Superior Court approved a settlement agreement with the Loblaw grocery chain and its parent company, George Weston Limited, following two class actions filed in Quebec and Ontario. The two companies agreed to pay $500 million to affected consumers, businesses, and organizations. In 2017, they admitted to participating in a scheme to fix the prices of bakery products, in violation of the Competition Act.

According to La Presse, each Quebec consumer registered in the class action could expect to receive about $100.

To qualify for compensation, you must:

  • Have purchased a bakery product between January 1, 2001, and December 31, 2021 (for example: packaged bread, bagels, naan, English muffins, wraps, pitas, tortillas) from a Loblaw-owned store (Maxi, Provigo, or Pharmaprix);

  • Be at least 18 years old;

  • Have been a resident of Quebec as of December 31, 2021.

You must also submit a claim by December 12, 2025 through the website for the Packaged Bread Class Action Settlement in Quebec.

No settlement agreement has been reached with the five other companies suspected of conspiring to fix bakery product prices. Loblaw and George Weston Limited are required to assist the legal team leading the class action in pursuing the case.
