Bill proposed to integrate complementary approaches in healthcare

The independent Member of the National Assembly for Laporte, Isabelle Poulet, has introduced a bill to the National Assembly aimed at better regulating and integrating complementary and integrative approaches into Quebec’s healthcare system.

The initiative notably proposes the creation of a specialized committee within the Institut national d’excellence en santé et en services sociaux. This committee would be mandated to rigorously evaluate different approaches, taking into account their effectiveness, safety, and level of scientific evidence, in order to provide recommendations to decision-makers and healthcare professionals.

The bill also calls for an expansion of the role of the Fonds de recherche du Québec to include more research on prevention, social determinants of health, and complementary approaches. The goal is to address certain knowledge gaps and support independent research in this field.

Another important element is the possibility that some complementary services could eventually be recognized as insured services, under certain conditions and upon recommendation from experts.

According to the MNA, this approach aims to evolve the healthcare model toward a more holistic system, with a greater emphasis on prevention and lifestyle habits, while maintaining strict oversight to protect the public.
