Bill McCleary discusses Shawville budget

22 February 2022 à 12:00 am

Just like other municipalities across the province, it’s budget season, and Shawville Mayor Bill McCleary spoke with CHIP 101.9 about his municipality’s plans for 2022.

He said that this year they ran a deficit of roughly $137,000, though he added that they were able to do so because they had a modest surplus to work with. He added that he was confident that they wouldn’t have to spend all the money that they had budgeted.

“I found over the eight years on council that you rarely spend what you think you will,” he said. “You normally over-budget so at the end of the day you can have a deficit budget and not spend what you thought.”

One of the projects that he pointed to was the expropriation of some land owned by Provigo, a subsidiary of Loblaws, in order to build a proper street for residents who had been using the private property to access their homes. He added that there were homes being built in the town’s subdivisions, and said he believes the town could be attractive to city-dwellers who are able to work from home.
