BEI investigating fatal police intervention in Clarendon

6 June 2023 à 1:16 pm

A police intervention that resulted the death of one person in Clarendon on Monday (June 5) has triggered an investigation by the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI). The BEI investigates all cases in which a person (other than an on-duty police officer) dies, suffers a serious injury or is injured by a firearm used by a police officer during a police intervention or while in police custody.

The BEI launched their investigation at 2:35 p.m. and has published the following statement (which has been translated from French), based on the preliminary information provided to them:

– On June 5, around 11:00 a.m., a call was placed to the Sûreté du Québec concerning a family dispute;

– On their way to the scene, the police requested a verification of firearm possession, with negative results;

– At around 11:17 a.m., two police officers arrived on the scene;

– When they arrived, people on the scene reportedly told the police that the person had gone into the shed behind the residence;

– The police officers went to the shed to find the person, who allegedly pointed a gun at them;

– A police officer drew his gun and fired at the person, who fell inside the shed;

– A security perimeter was set up to await the arrival of an intervention group;

– At 11:43 a.m., “une opération filet” was launched;

– At around 2:18 p.m., investigators recovered the person in the shed unresponsive and the person was subsequently pronounced dead.

Five BEI investigators have been assigned to the case. Given the circumstances of the event, the support services of a police force were requested, namely the Montréal Police (SPVM). A parallel criminal investigation into events leading up to the police intervention has been assigned to the SPVM.

No further information is available at this time.

The BEI is asking anyone who may have witnessed this event to contact them via their website.

The identity of the victim and the exact location of the scene have not yet been made public. Further details to follow.
