Ban on Keeping Chickens and Roosters in Residential Areas: Mansfield Warns Residents, Regulation to Be Enforced Soon

Ban on Keeping Chickens and Roosters in Residential Areas: Mansfield Warns Residents, Regulation to Be Enforced Soon

29 September 2025 à 10:13 am

Residents of the Municipality of Mansfield-et-Pontefract have received a notice reminding them that, under Bylaw No. 2010-002 regarding the keeping of farm animals in non-agricultural zones, it is prohibited to keep farm animals—including chickens and roosters—on residential properties. It appears that several residents have not always complied with this regulation in recent years.

“According to Article 3 of the bylaw, any property used to keep farm animals must have a minimum area of 10,000 square meters (107,650 sq. ft.). Since the vast majority of properties in residential zones do not meet this requirement, keeping poultry or other farm animals is not permitted,” said municipal inspector Jonathan Martin-Boisvert.

“Starting November 1, enforcement of the bylaw will be strengthened,” Jonathan Martin-Boisvert added. All residents who currently keep chickens or roosters in residential areas will be required to remove them before this date.
