Archéo-Pontiac celebrates the success of the public archaeological excavations 2024
The local organization Les Amis du Sault-des-chats will hold an event to celebrate the success of the 2024 public archaeological excavations that took place last September at the site of the former Hudson’s Bay Company trading post in the Municipality of Pontiac.
The excavations were open to the public for 4 days, and an additional 2 days were held for elementary and secondary school students from the Pontiac area, making a total of 6 days dedicated to the archaeological digs. The event brought together nearly a hundred participants, a record for the activity which held these excavations for the second consecutive year. The team leaders of this project, Audrey Lapointe and Maude Lambert;
The artifacts found during these excavations will allow archaeologists to corroborate hypotheses about the use of the site and its inhabitants. Moreover, some of the discoveries made on-site provide new insights into the occupation of this place. Maude Lambert;
In order to share the success of this activity and the discoveries made on the territory of Pointe à l’Indienne in Quyon, an event will take place on Friday, November 29, 2024, from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM, at the Quyon Community Center, adjacent to the ferry. This celebratory event will allow the invited guests to attend a press conference, hear testimonies, see the artifacts, appreciate watercolors made during the excavations, and exchange with other participants. This meeting will also be an opportunity to reflect on the next steps of the project and ways to showcase it in the community. Next year will be the 150th anniversary of Quyon, so the organizers hope for a great opportunity to revive the excavations again as part of these celebrations. Audrey Lapointe;
According to the organization Les Amis du Sault-des-chats, this type of community event is important for generating interest among residents, developing bonds within the community, creating opportunities to get involved, and discovering the cultural riches of the region.
This recognition morning aims to bring together all the people involved and allow them to see the impact of their participation by observing the repercussions of this collaboration on the successes of the Archéo-Pontiac project.
