A year of recovery ahead waiting of government flood compensation

BUDGET – The municipality of Waltham adopted its 2020 budget at its December meeting, in which only the ”bare minimum” will be provided for the residents as a result of the 2017 and 2019 floods. According to the Mayor of Waltham, David Rochon, the municipality is unfortunately in a difficult financial situation waiting on government compensation for the 2019 floods.

As explained by Rochon, in 2017,Waltham inured close to 217, 000 dollars in dept that they are still recovering from, in addition to the flood expenditures in 2019 which totaled around $70,000.

As a result, the municipality has had to cancel all municipal projects in 2020. Taxpayers will therefore see increases in their municipal tax bills. For garbage and recycling: 0.120 to 0.150 per 100 dollar of valuation and the enviro-taxe increased from 0.108 to 0.128 per 100 dollar of valuation.
