A practical guide to creating a community garden

A practical guide to creating a community garden

9 April 2026 à 10:06 am

Spring is here, bringing with it the desire to green our urban and rural spaces. Many municipalities are now looking to create areas dedicated to community or collective gardens, giving residents the opportunity to cultivate a small plot of land.

Beyond the ecological aspect, these projects address important social issues. Community gardens help foster social connections, particularly for newcomers and seniors, who often face isolation. They thus become structuring projects that strengthen the community fabric.

For school initiatives, collaboration between schools and municipalities is highly recommended. Using a school frontage as a gardening site allows residents easy and continuous access to green spaces.

Normand Veillette, development officer at Loisir Sport Outaouais, provides more details on this guide:

“A community garden could help people who are more isolated, to share knowledge in this collaborative project. Furthermore, with the ever-growing price of groceries, a community garden could help reduce this cost, on top of teaching people self-sufficiency in growing and harvesting produce.”

To support the implementation of these projects, a practical tool is available for download. It provides tips and inspiring examples for creating a community garden that brings people together and enhances your community.
