Yesterday was the 19th annual review for the provincial directors of youth protection across Quebec.

“As a DPJ, you have to intervene when a child’s safety and development are compromised. However, if we understand quite easily what compromises the safety of a child, what about his development? This year, the DPJs have chosen to answer this question by presenting various innovative programs in place in Quebec that are already having a real impact in supporting the full development of children of different ages in different areas of their lives,” explained the DPJ in a press release. This year, a considerable increase in the number of reports has been observed. Here are the various statistics that have been revealed.

Provincial statistics 2021-2022
— The directors of youth protection (DPJ) processed 132,632 reports during 2021-2022, compared to 117,904 last year, which represents an increase of 12.5% ​​and an average of 363 child situations reported per day in Quebec, 40 more than last year.

— Number of retained reports: 43,688. This is a decrease in retained reports of 2.3% compared to the 2020-2021 fiscal year.

— The retention rate for reports is 33%. Last year it was 37.9%.

— Again this year, the majority of reports come from employees of public bodies (34%), the proportions having remained almost unchanged from previous years.

— The main living environment of children in the care of the DPJ is still the family environment (53.7%). Again this year, we see that a greater proportion of children live with a significant other (14.7%).

Statistics for the Outaouais region in 2021-22

— The DPJ processed 7,112 reports during the 2021-2022 year, compared to 6,904 last year, which represents an increase of 3% and an average of 19 child situations reported per day.

— Number of retained reports: 2,283. This is a decrease in retained reports of 13.6% compared to the 2020-2021 fiscal year.

— The report retention rate is 32.1%. Last year it was 38.4%.

— Again this year, the majority of reports come from employees of public bodies (30 8%), the proportions having not changed from previous years.

— The main living environment of children in the care of the DPJ is still the family environment (46.6%). Again this year, we see that a greater proportion of children live with a significant other (22.5%).
