2019 Floods: MRC Pontiac asks for the support from taxpayers

At the last night’s Meeting of the Mayors of the MRC Pontiac, a resolution was passed to ask the Quebec government “to provide support and compensation to all taxpayers affected by the 2019 floods. (including secondary homes and cottagers)”. During the meeting, Warden Jane Toller spoke about the importance of “keeping” non-permanent residents/cottagers in the area.

Other requests were also resolved by the council of mayors in particular regards to the management of the hydro dams. The mayors want the government to review the current infrastructure of dams and reservoirs on the Ottawa River, as well as the mandate and procedures of the Ottawa River Regulation Planning Board.

The council of mayors is also calling for a study on the feasibility of augmenting the reservoir’s capacity on the Ottawa River watershed to reduce the flooding along this river. They also hope that the provincial government will amends the eligibility requirements for financial assistance under the “Compensation and Disaster Financial Assistance Program” to include seasonal (cottages) and main residences.

The MNA for Pontiac André Fortin reacted to this position taken both by the MRC Pontiac and by the Warden during his speech on Monday evening meeting in l’Isle-aux-Allumettes.
