The Quebec Finance Minister, Eric Girard, tabled a motion to update the Fall budget to give $ 1.7 billion to families and seniors over the next five years. The different measures include implementing a Family Allowance, freezing the additional contribution for childcare in subsidized services starting in 2019, and wanting to introduce, starting in 2018, an amount in support of low-income seniors, ages 70 or older.

The MNA of Gatineau, Robert Bussière welcomed the news, stating: “We are taking action to allow businesses invest more in the region and to improve their chances of standing out in increasingly competitive market,” he said.

More details on the measurements:
• The Family Allowance will enable more than 423,000 Quebec families to benefit, as of January 2019, from additional tax assistance of up to $ 500 per year for families with two children, and $ 1,000 per year for those with three children.
• The freezing of the additional contribution for childcare in 2019, which will benefit 140,000 families, is a first step towards its abolition, which must be done gradually from the next budget, as promised by the Prime Minister during the election campaign.
• The introduction of the new tax credit to support seniors will enable more than 570,000 seniors aged 70 and over to benefit, as of 2018, from an annual assistance of up to $ 200 for single people and $ 400 for seniors.
