November is Radon Awareness Month, a radioactive gas that is one of the leading causes of lung cancer. Radon is invisible and odorless and is naturally present in the soil. It seeps into buildings through foundation cracks and other openings. When radon enters enclosed spaces like homes, it can accumulate to dangerous concentrations, affecting the air we breathe and being very harmful to health.

Mathieu Brossard from Health Canada mentions that it is possible to measure radon in our home and carry out certain work if the detected radon level is above the standard recommended by Health Canada:

According to the 2024 Pan-Canadian Radon Survey, recently unveiled, the probability that a residential home contains levels equal to or above the critical threshold set by Health Canada is about one in six for Quebec but approximately one in three in Pontiac. Again, Mathieu Brossard:

Even if you have already measured radon in the past, it is important to measure again if you have since carried out energy efficiency improvements. Improvements such as better insulation, sealing cracks, or changing windows can reduce air exchange and increase radon concentrations.
