An early morning house fire on chemin Herbie in Clarendon August 27 resulted in the total loss of the building, but thankfully no one was physically harmed.

Emergency crews were called out 3:50 a.m. Tuesday morning for a structure fire, and four trucks and 19 firefighters responded. When they arrived, the building was fully involved.

Shawville Clarendon Fire Chief Lee Laframboise said that the two men in the building at the time of the blaze were awakened by the smoke detector, which he said likely saved their lives.

“They’re lucky to be alive,” he said. “If it wasn’t for the smoke alarms, they’re dead for sure.”

He said that the homeowner was in the final stages completing a large addition to the home, with plans to move in next week. The two men living in the older portion of the home were his relatives.

Laframboise added that they were able to save a couple of nearby trailers and a shed, but the home, the addition and the garage were totally destroyed. Crews were on scene until late morning.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
