L’Isle-aux-Allumettes, Chichester and Sheenboro residents can come fill sandbags for their homes at Demers Centre Municipal garage

The municipalities of L’Île-aux-Allumettes, Chichester and Sheenboro issued a press release Tuesday (May 2) concerning the situation of the Ottawa River. According to the Municipality of L’Isle-aux-Allumettes, multiple private roads are closed as a result of rising water levels.

“We ask that people respect the road signs and do not use these roads unless absolutely necessary. If your road becomes inaccessible, please contact the municipal office as soon as possible. Residents are informed that emergency vehicles will not be able to access roads that are closed due to flooding,” L’Isle-aux-Allumettes officials said in the press release.

The municipality has indicated that sandbags and sand are available to all residents at the municipal garage in Demers Centre, 450 chemin du Rang 5 until 7 p.m. Residents of the municipalities of L’Isle-aux-Allumettes, Chichester and Sheenboro are welcome.

“The municipality is calling on volunteers to come fill sandbags at the Center Demers municipal garage (450 chemin du Rang 5). We ask people to respect everyone’s needs and requests and to only take sandbags if their main residence is in imminent danger,” underlined the municipality. ”The Ottawa River Regulation Planning Board is issuing the following warnings: ILES-AUX-ALLUMETTES / LAC COULONGE: Levels are expected to be 50 to 55 cm above peak levels seen last week (April 21-23). Levels at Lac Coulonge should be similar to those observed at the beginning of May 2017.

We encourage all residents who are in need to take the necessary precautions. Residents MUST take all necessary steps to ensure their own safety. If your home becomes unsafe, leave.
– If you decide to evacuate your home safely, please contact the municipal office.
– If you need immediate and urgent help, dial 911.
– If you need temporary accommodation, please contact the municipal office.”

For security reasons, the municipal council of L’Isle-aux-Allumettes has asked to remember to turn off your electricity before leaving.
