100 Mile Arts Network to host documentary film workshops

A regional arts group is putting on a series of workshops to teach young adults the ins and outs of documentary filmmaking this summer. The 100 Mile Arts Network, which is based in Wakefield, will be offering the free 12-day course to 8 students between the ages of 18 and 30, starting on July 21. The instruction will take place at the Centre Wakefield La Pêche, located at 38 chemin de la Vallée in Wakefield.

The network’s Executive Director Paul Brown told CHIP 101.9 that the lessons would cover a wide variety of skills related to creating documentaries, from script writing and composition to editing and post-production. All necessary equipment will be provided but students are asked to bring a smart-phone.

Brown noted that the students will be instructed by accomplished documentary filmmaker and academic Lia Tarachansky. The student’s works will be showcased at a festival in October.

Brown said that the course would provide a solid basis for anyone interested in studying filmmaking at the post-secondary level. He hoped that by training people from the area, the network would be able to hire them for various projects down the road.
