Shaughn McArthur raises concerns over CNL waste facility in Chalk River

1 May 2022 à 12:00 am

With the Member of Parliament for the Pontiac, Sophie Chatel asking the House of Commons to intervene in the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) plans to modify its opperating lisence to allow for the construction of a near surface nuclear waste facility in Chalk river, next in line to raise concerns is Shaughn McArthur, the former candidate for the Green Party of Canada.

McArthur, who has been heavily involved in implementing Chatel’s “Green and Prosperous Ponitac Project, argued against the CNL’s changing its licencing, raising concerns over the laboratories current lisencing agreement.

“There really isn’t a social license in the Pontiac, or even in the surrounding area, I’d say, to advance this project for nuclear waste in Chalk River. I heard it during the election campaign and I continue to work with civil organizations who are very clear. People do not think that waste should be kept so close to the river,” McArthur says. “There are serious problems with the project and how it is progressing. There are questions on the science, and civil society scientists agree that a private organization who want to profit, can, if the science surrounding this project is right.”
