Nicole Thompson hoping to change things up in Portage

Portage du Fort mayoral candidate Nicole Thompson is hoping to make some changes if she’s elected to council. The race in 2021 is the same as it was in 2017, with Thompson running against three-term incumbent Lynne Cameron. Cameron won a slim victory four years ago by a margin of just six votes. That year the village had 182 valid ballots cast out of 234 registered electors.

Thompson served as the postmaster there for years and currently runs the local corner store, Dépanneur Thompson, with her family. A resident of the community for the past 43 years, she said that what she liked most about the village was its beauty, from the stone houses to the waterfront to the local art gallery.

She said that she wasn’t planning to run again this year, but was convinced to offer a choice for the citizens of Portage.

Thompson said that one of her goals would be to increase the professionalism and transparency of the council. She said that council needs to have a better grasp on what their duties and powers are, as well as being more open with citizens about what goes on at their meetings.

The full interview with Thompson is available here.
